There once lived a merry cobbler in a town. Every day he worked hard from morning till night. He made all kinds of shoes and boots. Every day people heard him singing at his work.
He was a skillful cobbler and a good man. So many people came to him and gave him work. They liked him because he always did his work carefully.
At night he slept peacefully. He was poor and had nothing to lose. He had no fear of thieves. So he did not lock his doors at night.
Close to him there lived a rich man. He was not happy. He had no peace of mind. At night he was careful to lock his doors. He did not sleep well at all. He feared that some thief might come and take away his gold.
One day the rich man called the cobbler to him and said, "Friend, you sing while you work. You seem to be very happy. I like you very much. So I shall give you a gift. Take this sum of money." He offered a hundred rupees. The cobbler took it gladly and went home.
He dug a hole and put the money carefully in it. That night he closed his doors and locked them. But sleep did not come to him. He was saying to himself, "Some one may come and take away my money. I shall then become poor once again."
During the day the cobbler did not sing as before. His mind was not in his work. He thought only of his hundred rupees. He felt quite unhappy.
At last the poor man took the hundred rupees back to the rich man and said to him, "My lord, please take back your money and give me back my songs and my sleep."
He returned the money and went back joyfully to his work. He was once again a happy man. During the day he sang and at night he slept well.
