CHARAN (THE DOG)

     Indra is the King of the Devas. The Devas had a dog, named Charan.  There lived two demons Vidyuth and Suvidyuth.  They troubled the Devas very much. Indra wanted to kill them with the help of cows.  So he gathered many cows and kept them in a place.  He asked Charan, the dog, to keep watch over the cows and not to allow them to run away.

     The two demon brothers got to know that Indra wanted to kill them with the help of the cows.  So they wanted to steal the cows and save their lives.  They went and saw that the cows were watched by a dog.  They gave milk to the dog to drink and stole the cows.

     Indra came and saw the cows were not there. He asked Charan what had become of the cows. As he had been given a bribe, Charan told a lie.  He said the cows had perhaps lost their way.  The servants of Indra said..."Sir, you kick Charan and he will tell you the truth." At once Indra kicked Charan on his stomach.  Then all the milk given by the demons came out of the dog's stomach.  In great fear Charan ran away to save his life.  Indra ran after the dog and was able to see the demon brothers at the place to which the the dog went.  Indra killed the demon brothers and returned home, leaving the dog there
